It's been fun...

Hi all.

The time has come for me to make a statement about my future concerning BeOS/Haiku. I owe you that I think, since I've been a very regular contributor to this community upto now.

I've been on holiday for a few weeks in Spain just now, in a tiny place where 'time stood still' so to speak. The old village where I stayed is situated in the mountains. There's nothing much to do there, except enjoying the overwhelming nature, do long walks, think, talk with the people I travelled with, eat a orange here and there, and drink a beer. Much in contrast to my busy 'normal, daily life' back home. And much in contrast to 'normal' holiday 'resorts' I tended to visit. Being in this village has been an experience I will *never* forget, it's changing my life. It's good. I feel it in my heart. I have to follow this new path unfolding before my eyes. It's my destination. It's real life. I love it, I need it.

About my (future) contributions for BeOS/Haiku.

As you all probably know, I've spent most of my freetime on BeOS related development. This means that other aspects of my life have been 'neglected' a lot. I've always felt it deep down and I knew it had to change someday. Well, that day has come.

So, I'll nolonger work on all those drivers much. Maybe even I'll quit alltogether. I'll keep following Haiku progressing towards a full, useable 'replacement' operating system for BeOS though. I really hope it will succeed. I love those systems. They are intuitive and easy to use. They make using computers a breeze. Unlike using Windows or Linux which scare me away and make me feel frustrated.

Here are my suggestions:
- I'll do one more Matrox driver release pending updated TVout support completion for G100 and G200 cards. There's not much work left todo for that.
- I now nolonger support any of the programs and drivers I wrote, apart from maybe tiny patches like adding cardID's and such which virtually cost no time to do.
- For the nVidia driver I might continue to do a bit more work for now though: I'm talking about testing a bit with 3D support for newer cards so the new Linux open DRI driver has an improved chance on success. The efforts I'll do are minimal though: only a few nessesities and only if I can manage this while putting in small amounts of time.
- We (the BeOS/Haiku community) need (a) new maintainer(s) for all stuff I did, including for the nVidia driver. I won't be responsible any longer for these items. I might be able to guide someone a bit though every once and a while.
- I have a few items here that can be given to new maintainers: a VIA Nimble V5 and several Matrox graphics cards.
- nVidia hardware I'll probably need a bit longer for those 'final' 3D tests. Some cards can be given to a new maintainter in a bit of time though: and some I'll keep because I had to purchase them. Unless these will be payed for.
- a General 3D related thought: For 3D support I suggest 'porting' Linux DRI drivers back to Haiku 'in the end', including the new nVidia DRI driver that's in the process of being developed. My nVidia driver is probably best left alone in the end, since it's based on an very old version of MESA. It's just a proof-of-concept, along with a good testing bed for hardware knowledge development (for the new DRI driver 'for instance').

Conclusion.

So, that's about it! It's been a hell of a fun ride! I've given my *very* best efforts to this community, I hope you see that. I don't regret having done that, though it came at a cost. This was a (technical) chapter I needed in my life. it's done now however.

Before continuing life, hopefully finding inner tranquillity; Before continuing life in a much more complete, sensitive, loving and personal way, I need to do some soul searching. So, I'm taking a time-out. I'll probably not respond to Email much.

Thanks for your awesome support people!!

Kind regards, and the very best to you all.

Rudolf.

… and that you have! Thanks for all the hard work Rudolf, it's really a shock to hear the news, but I fully understand!

Best of luck, Rudolf!

I'm sorry to hear that you're stopping your driver developoment - it was truly inspiring.

To have developed the drivers from scratch (interfacing MESA), with minimal documentation is an incredible feat. If only certain companies were a bit more forthcoming with the card interface, I'm sure the speed & quality would be even more comparable!

...don't tell me you're settling down - what is there outside of computers?! ;p

Good luck in finding your inner harmony!

I wish you the best, and thanks for everything!

>>As you all probably know, I've spent most of my freetime on BeOS related development.

Yes, I know...
And you are right, you spent to much freetime.

Hopefully BeOs/Haiku gets more attention. You may find a paid job to do driver-work then.

Thank you for everything (I still remember all those e-mails until my card was working).

Maybe you should travel more to get more great experiences.

Bruno

Thnx Rudolf,

I enjoyed running your driver back in the days I had an nvidia card. After that I enjoyed reading about your wonderfull work.

I must say you deserve a social life and the Netherlands isn't that bad to explore.

Bedankt voor de drivers!

I'm very sad that you want to leave us. OTOH, I know your feelings very well and I can only say thank you for all your efforts and good luck with finding a good balance in life. I wish you all the best!

Thanks for your efforts on the Haiku nVidia driver and for your collaboration with the DRI driver folks. The place in Spain sounds amazing, you deserve every second of it and more importantly the happiness it has brought you. If you are ever in Western Australia, I owe you a beverage, look me up - http://pabs.zip.to

Thanks for your time to provide us good NVidia drivers under Be*Zeta*Haiku OS. We will miss you when NV 8600 will be out ;-)

Thanks indeed for your commitment in the BeOS community !
I wish you to enjoy every moment in your life. BeOS rocked, Nature rock well life ! And haiku will refine it ;)

Run run run and go have some fun. Your work has been outstanding and much more than anyone could ask. I do understand and support your decision to go and seek your happiness. You my friend have brought tons of happiness to others--Dwight

Rudolf,

Thanks for all the great work you have done! Have fun!

Thank you for all your support Rudolf!

Rudolph,

Thanks for all the hard work, you where the one who made it possible for me to start exploring BeOS back when I first discovered it. The system I own now would still be unusable without your efforts.

Bedankt,

Thanks Rudolf. Best wishes for your new outlook on life. I'm glad to see you've discovered the great outdoors. It's always best to put the real world first before the online world! I had a similar experience when I worked in China for 5 weeks last year. Seeing life there made me look at how I lived, and spent my resources be it time, or money!

I wish you all the best, and hope you browse by often to see how everyone is doing.

PS. Once a coder always a coder!

I _really_ want gnarly video drivers for BeOS, but you more than deserve take the rest of your life off.
Luck, dude.

Thanks for your amazing work, Rudolf! Megaprops to you for that, but I am also really happy for you that you are moving into a more 'real' chapter. Many blessings!

Kev

We all live busy lives. Many of us working ourselves into the grave. I wish more people would come to realize the importance of personal discovery and find happiness through their journeys.

I appreciate your work, your support of the BeOS/Haiku community, and your development efforts. Enjoy your life and remember... You only get one life for sure, the others are speculative at best.

Have a good life.

Respectfully,

"The Haggle Ethic" ?

Maybe you "just had to see it" - the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live which was hosted by Steve Martin. There was a sketch in which he was bargaining with Middle-Eastern-Terrorists. They wanted him to do a golf-sketch on one of their leaders, and he said "I don't do special material". But then they offered $20k, and he said "Well..."

Variants on self-sacrifice-ethics vs haggle-culture, hmm... It is possible to imagine a universe in which "the community" would respond, "We think your drivers are worth $20k" and Rudolf might say "Well..."

I have never tried the OS, but I also am at a similar point in my life... After all these years and being back home for the past 3-years it is time to move on and possible pick up an old Music Career that I had not long ago... My many many Years in Computers have been a learning experience but something is missing I found after coming home to spend time with my Father who passed while I was here...

I wish you all the Luck & Happiness you can find... :)

Have you heard of the four noble truths in Buddhism? Check it out. It will change you further.

thanks for all you've been doing for us, we will miss you.
good luck for your inner search, and take care..

Thanks for all your hard work and sacrifice of personal time. It is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you'll be back when and if you feel ready. Just enjoy your kid growing up and the other things in life.

I'll have to drop you a line sometime and see how you are enjoying life.

Cale

Sounds a good idea, you've been doing loads on these drivers for ages. Doubt any of my original code exists... Please let me know the next maintainer of the Matrox stuff though anyway and I'll put a link on my site. Still get some hits and that will point people in the right direction. Also if you've discovered the secret of life please let me know! I'm bored of spending all my time writing stuff for banks when I really want to go live in the Lake District and do lots of walking....

You rule man, best wishes and hope you find all the happiness in the world. Thanks for your time, effort and companionship.

Good look on your journey. I'm assured you will find something you didn't knew existed.

Hello Rudolf!

Thanks for your great work!

But I want to ask a simple question. The Linux DRI drivers you mention in your post, are they open source 3D drivers for nvidia cards? If they are, where can I find them? I googled for them but couldn't find anything.

Since I have a Geforce 2 Go card in my laptop that's not supported any more by nvidia a oss 3d driver for my card would be awesome... (Yes, I am the guy you had some pretty intense e-mailing some years ago with to get your driver to work with Geforce 2 Go chips) :)

Thanks!

May yours always be a best in the house.
You will always be among the best in this house.

Travel with Grace
knowing that you are always at home.

Be well always.
At least until there is no more.

Visit often, or, better, choose to stay.

Most importantly:
THANK YOU!

...now..., about extending PowerPC support to PCI cards... :0

Thank you for providing better drivers to the BeOS system...

:'-(

I wish you the best.

"Goodbye and thanks for all the code"

I was wondering how my friend could save a fortune on her credit cards. Now I too have the secret.

Ik dacht ik kijk eens, misschien heb je nieuws over jezelf, familie etc.

Zie ik dat ik niet eens iets heb geschreven (ik dacht van wel)

Anyway; veel plezier!
